CHARACTER ALMANAC
Character Name: Merlin Percy Pletcher
Concept Line: Petite powder keg tests mettle, embraces adventure, and serenades wild animals.
House/Year: Mothgarden/Senior
Classes: Charms, Potions, Transfiguration (H), Cryptozoology & Magizoology (H), Defense Against the Dark Arts, Outdoor Magic, Animagus Studies
Extracurricular Activities: Quidditch (Seeker), Adventure Club, Culinary Club, Dueling & Wandwork Club, Performing Arts Club
Brief Summary: The son of a missing dragonologist that wants to follow in his father's footsteps and always feels like he has something to prove. He wants to be capable, independent, and fearless; he also wants to be perceived as capable, independent, and fearless and cares too much about what other people think of him. As a result, he's easy to goad into challenges (how dare you suggest there are things he can't do??) and a bit surly by default. Unfortunately, he's also prone to complaining even when he isn't unhappy (especially about things that go against his desired image) but those that know him can typically tell when he's being insincere. He tends to get along better with animals than people and wants all familiars to be his friend. He has a love/hate relationship with his small size and ~cute~ appearance, but is dedicated to his own personal aesthetic. Please tell him he looks good today because he does.
Places of Residence: Murtson Springs, CO. Prior to settling in Colorado when he was six, his family traveled constantly while his father studied rare and elusive dragon breeds.
Education History: Before attending Peckenpaugh, Merlin was homeschooled and then attended a small public day school in Murtson Springs.
Class Involvement: Merlin is a diligent student and pragmatic about academics, but generally prefers the hands-on part of the curriculum to the lectures and readings. He excels in Transfiguration and Cryptozoology & Magizoology but works hard in all of his subjects. While he doesn't doesn't care if other people don't pay attention, he'll definitely tell people that are being distracting to shut up or knock it off.
Local Presence: While not antisocial, Merlin can be a bit of a loner since people tend to get under his skin, so it's not unusual to find him holed up in his room or wandering around outdoors instead of seeking out company. That said, he never misses his various classes/clubs or Quidditch practice and he works out daily, so he's not that hard to track down. He doesn't have much of a presence in town.
Partyin’ Partyin’: Merlin's party attendance is inconsistent. Sometimes he goes because of curiosity, because of his friends, or because he's been goaded into it. Sometimes he skips and doesn't feel like he's missed a thing. He doesn't drink or smoke by choice, but has been roped into drinking competitions more than once. He's a complete lightweight, though.
Dating History: Currently, Merlin hasn't had any past relationships, but I'm open to plotting if someone would actually want to smooch this human cherry bomb. He doesn't play kissing games unless needled into it. But needling him into it isn't difficult.
Common Knowledge:
He changes his hair color and hair style like most people change clothes. He does this himself and has some definite stylistic flare. He can be convinced to give haircuts or dye hair (with charms) for other people, but may need to be bribed with food.
He's been on the Mothgarden Quidditch team since his freshman year and has been the Seeker since his sophomore year. He's known to be fast, fearless, and highly maneuverable on a broom but also highly impulsive. He's unusually aggressive for a Seeker, willing to push and get pushed, and he's tried to get other players to follow him into deep dives, hoping they'll lack his finesse and crash into the ground. Whoops.
He's a bit of an animal whisperer and likes animals quite a lot more than people; the feeling is often mutual. He's not entirely antisocial, though. He can sometimes be caught trying to befriend other people's familiars.
He sings; he has a pleasant voice and tendency to go falsetto. Sometimes he sings for Performing Arts Club and sometimes he sings at animals. He's sure they like it.
He's the youngest of seven children (none of which went to Peckenpaugh) and the son of a dragonologist father and an herbologist mother. He's got a Muggle stepfather.
Personal Stuff:
Merlin's father is generally considered to be dead because he's been missing for more than ten years, but Merlin's never really accepted that. There's no proof that he's dead, after all. This is a sore subject for him and he'll get angry if corrected or questioned about this. He speaks about his father in the present tense. His family settled in Colorado after his father's disappearance.
The youngest of seven, Merlin was alternately pushed around and coddled by his siblings, leaving him with a lot of mixed feelings about how to interact with other people and a lot of defensiveness about the sort of person he is, the things he likes, etc.
Merlin's father went to Peckenpaugh and was in Deeplurk. He almost went there just for that reason, but decided to follow his own path instead. Just this once.
The Secrets:
Despite acting like he can take on the whole world by himself, Merlin does struggle with confidence. He's deeply impacted by failure and criticism.
When asked about his height, he claims to be 5'4" but is actually 5'3". Just let him have this.

This Year: This is Merlin's last year at Peckenpaugh and he's resolved to set all of his standards high and meet them. Good grades! Best Seeker! Turn into something cool in Animagus Studies! Befriend more familiars (yes, this is important)! He's eager to graduate but every now and then worries that he isn't ready...not that he'd ever admit that. He'll be researching and applying to apprentice programs ASAP.
Wanted Lines:
FRIENDS: Everyone needs a few. Even moody dragonboys. Close friends that he occasionally instigates physical contact with (snugs, piggyback rides, etc.) and acts like this is doing them a favor even though he's clearly into it friends are especially welcome.
FAMILIAR FRIENDS: Merlin is good with animals and very interested in being friends, so it'd be lovely have a few established familiar friends in canon. He may or may not be friendly with their owners at all and a mixed bag there would honestly be pretty great.
PERFORMANCE FRENEMY: Merlin's personality may not be sweet but his voice is and a frequent/standard duet partner for him would be a lot of fun. The notion of them making beautiful music together and having similar musical sensibilities but otherwise being a little :| at each other delights me, but an actual friend would also be cute.
OTHER STUFF? Quidditch relationships, roommate/housemate relationships, rivals (Quidditch or otherwise), food friends (he's a food mooch, especially for sweets, please feed him??), people that like to wind him up, etc.? I'm up to try out anything!
